Jimmy Akena will bear the flag of Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) in the 2021 elections after being voted the party president in a Saturday delegates conference.
Akena, who is also the representative of Lira Municipality in parliament, is the only candidate who returned nomination forms of the four that had shown interest in raising the party’s flag.
During the Delegates Conference held at Kasangati Resort Hotel in Wakiso district, it was revealed that other contenders were Beatrice Amara, Tom Omino and Denis Enap.
In his 5 years at the helm of the party, Akena promised to crack down on those that undermine UPDC’s leadership to serve selfish interests.
“We shouldn’t undermine the democratic process in the party because we have not won. I will never allow anyone to fight the will of the people. Stop undermining the will of the people,” he said.
“When you’re seeking leadership, the leadership must come from the people. However, it is unfortunate that some members undermine the rule of democracy.”
